The Bloomer Blackhawks baseball team added two non-conference wins to their record to finish out the regular season last week. Monday, June 7, Bloomer defeated McDonell Central, 6-5, on the road and Tuesday, June 8, at home, they beat Osseo-Fairchild, 6-0. The #2 Blackhawks started post season play on Tuesday, June 15 at home in WIAA Div. 2 Regional action against #3 Mosinee. Bloomer received a bye in the first round.
Monday At McDonell Central
The Bloomer Blackhawks Grabed the lead in the seventh inning for victory over McDonell Central.
Bloomer was down by three runs before a four run seventh inning propelled them to victory.
McDonell Central scored three runs in the first inning. The Blackhawks got on the board in the third inning with two runs to cut McDonell’s lead to 3-2. However, McDonell came back and scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to pad their lead and make it 5-2.
Down three runs in the top of the seventh, junior Marcus Harelstad stepped to the plate and bunted to third base for a single. Senior Ethan Rothbauer did the same thing to put runners at first and second before Harelstad advanced to third on an error by the third baseman. Next up, junior Jay Ryder singled on a line drive to center field and Harlestad scored and Rothbauer advanced to second. With sophomore Keegan Yohnk at the plate, Rothbauer stole third and Ryder stole second. Rothbauer then scored on an error by the catcher and Ryder advanced to third on the same error. With Bloomer now down by only one run and the tieing run at third, Yohnk doubled on a fly ball to right field that scored Ryder and tied the game at 5-5 with no outs. Sophomore Braden Steinmetz went in as a courtesy runner for Yohnk and advanced to third on a passed ball before Bloomer’s next batter struck out looking. Junior Connor Crane then reached on an error but Steinmetz was out advancing home. With senior Cole Schwab at the plate, Crane stole second. With a one-one count, Schwab singled on a line drive to right field that drove home Crane and the Blackhawks took the lead 6-5. The next batter flew out to end the inning for Bloomer.
The Blackhawks retired the first three McDonell batters with a line out and two strike outs to win the game.
Yohnk was the winning pitcher for Bloomer. He lasted two and a third innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out two and walking zero.
Junior Jack Strand started the game for the Blackhawks. The righty allowed seven hits and five runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking one
Rothbauer went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits. Bloomer tore up the base paths, as three players stole at least two bases. Rothbauer led the way with three.
Tuesday v.s. Osseo-Fairchild
The Bloomer Blackhawks defeated Osseo-Fairchild 6-0 on Tuesday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Ryder induced a fly out from Keyton Boettcher to finish off the game.
The Blackhawks got things started in the second inning when Crane grounded out, scoring one run. Strand started out the inning reaching when he was hit by a pitch. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on an error while Crane was batting. Bloomer scored another run in the inning when senior Connor Hicks hit a double that scored senior Jackson Simmons from first.
Bloomer notched another run in the third before adding three runs in the fourth inning. Schwab walked to start the inning and then Simmons singled to put runners at first and second. Schwab and Simmons both advance a base on a wild pitch before the next batter struck out looking. With Harelstad at the plate, the pitcher balked and Schwab scored and Simmons went to third. Harelstad then walked to put runners at the corners. Simmons got picked off at third and Harelstad stole second before Rothbauer singled on a ground ball to third. Harelstad advanced to third. Ryder came to the plate and Rothbauer stole second before Ryder singled on a line drive to left that scored both Harelstad and Rothbauer to give Bloomer a 6-0 lead after four complete innings. Neither team scored after that and the game ended with the Blackhawks winning 6-0.
Ryder was the winning pitcher for Bloomer. The righty surrendered zero runs on zero hits over five innings, striking out five and walking one.
Rothbauer started the game for the Blackhawks. He surrendered zero runs on two hits over two innings, striking out three and walking one.
Bloomer totaled nine hits. Rothbauer and Simmons each managed multiple hits. Rothbauer went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits.
