When it comes to sports a lot is made of the home court advantage but with a large group of traveling fans, including a bunch of their excited peers cheering very loudly, the Bloomer Blackhawk volleyball team overcame that advantage not once but twice last week.
Thursday night, Oct. 31 in Osceola, against the # 1 seed Osceola Chieftains the #2 seed Blackhawks won 3–1 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23) to advance to the sectional finals on Saturday, Nov. 2.
On Saturday, the Blackhawks defeated the #1 seed Mosinee Indians 3–2 (25-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 15-12) in Mosinee to win the sectional champions title and a trip to the state tournament in Green Bay. It is the first time Bloomer has made to state in volleyball.
It was the fourth time Bloomer has made it to the sectional finals but the only time they have won it. Last year the Blackhawks lost 3–1 to Mosinee in Altoona.
Although the match was played in Mosinee there were almost as many, maybe more, Blackhawk fans in attendance as Indian fans including a large and very excited group of Bloomer High School students and the pep band.
In Osceola on Thursday, Bloomer won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-19, but faltered a little on the third losing 22-25, but came back and won the fourth 25-23.
On Thursday, senior Larrisa Fossum had 16 attack kills, senior Emma Seibel had 10 kills and two service aces, and senior Emma Krejci had six kills to round out the top three offensive players. Junior Josie Kostner had 30 defensive digs, Seibel had 14 digs, and seniors Shantelle Ruf and Jordan Klima each had 12 digs to round out the top three defensive players.
Against Mosinee on Saturday, Bloomer lost the first set 21-25, came back and won the second set 25-21 then lost the third set 20-25 but won the fourth set 25-23 to set up a fifth and final set. All the while the Bloomer crowd cheered the girls on, sometimes at a deafening level.
In the fifth set, Bloomer went down by two points to begin with but battled back to tie it at 2-2 and then pulled ahead 2-6 before the Indians scored again to make 3-6. The Blackhawks answered back with two more points to make it 3-8. Bloomer kept the lead but Mosinee narrowed it to within one point at 12-13, but the Blackhawks answered back and with the score at 12-14, Kostner hit the last serve of the game. The Indians returned the service but the Blackhawks hit the ball back across the net, this time the Indians first hit went wild and when they couldn’t recover the Bloomer crowd erupted with cheers. The Blackhawks volleyball team was on its way to state for the first time ever.
Offensively on Saturday, Krejci had 11 attack kills and three service aces, and Seibel and Fossum each had seven kills. Klima had four service aces. Defensively Kostner had 17 digs, Ruf had 16 digs, and senior Rylie Jarr had nine digs.
The Bloomer Blackhawks are seeded #4 at the state tournament and face #1 seed McFarland on Friday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
