Conner Crane slides

Freshman Conner Crane slides into third base on Tuesday, April 23 during the Blackhawks game 3–1 lose to Northwestern.

The Bloomer Blackhawks baseball team came up short last week against Northwestern at home and in a doubleheader in Cumberland.

On Tuesday, April 23 the Blackhawks took on the Tigers at home. Bloomer started out the game on a high note with a run in the first inning but it turned out to be their only run in the game. Northwestern answered back right away putting one run on the board in the top of the second. Both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth innings but the Tigers scored again with one run in each of the next two innings. The Blackhawks couldn’t come up with anymore runs and the game end after a scoreless seventh inning with the Tigers winning three to one.

Cole Schwab pitched five innings allowing five hits and three runs. He struck out four and walked one batter. Kaden Thurmond pitched two innings. He allowed no hits or runs, struck out four and walked two batters.

At the plate Ty Davis 1x3, Conner Crane 1x2, with a double, and Carter Rubenzer 1x2 were the only Blackhawks to get a hit. Schwab and Rubenzer both got to base on balls and Crane was hit by a pitch. Zach Ruf scored the only run and also stole a base. Ethan Rothbauer is credited with an RBI.

In Cumberland on Friday, April 26, Bloomer played a double header against the Beavers.

In the first game the Blackhawks started off with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cumberland answered back with one run in the second, but Bloomer added to its lead with a run in the bottom of the second. After a scoreless third inning the Beavers bats got hot in the fourth and they added six runs to the board. Not to be outdone, the Blackhawks answered back in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to tie the score at seven runs a piece going into the seventh inning. A scoreless seventh and one run each in the eighth brought up a ninth inning with the score tied at eight. Once again the Cumberland bats came alive and they put five more runs on the board. Unfortunately this time Bloomer wasn’t able to answer back and the game ended with the score 13–8 in Cumberland’s favor.

Bloomer went through five pitchers in the game. Thurmond threw 3.2 innings allowing seven hits, six runs, struck out two batters and walked three. Davis pitched 2.1 innings allowing a hit and a run, struck out three and walked four. Schwab pitched two innings with a hit, a run and three strike outs. Rothbauer pitched .2 innings, allowed four hits and five runs, walked one and struck out one. Avery Macik pitched .1 innings.

Leif Iverson 3x3, Rothbauer 2x5, and Crane 2x4 were the leading batters for Bloomer. Iverson scored a home run and Iverson and Rothbauer each got a double and two RBIs. Crane and Thurmond were both hit by pitches and Iverson walked twice and Davis and Macik each walked once. Davis, Iverson and Macik also stole bases. Trent Tozer is credited with a sacrifice and Davis with a sacrifice fly.

In game two of the doubleheader Cumberland was the first to score with two runs in the bottom of the first. In the top of the third Bloomer put two runs on the board to tie the score but Cumberland answered back with a run to pull ahead again. Cumberland scored again in the fourth. Bloomer was able to add another run in the top of the sixth but the Beavers added another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5–3 in their favor going into the seventh inning. Bloomer wasn’t able to score in the seventh and the game ended with Cumberland winning by two runs.

Rothbauer pitched one inning for Bloomer allowing two hits and two runs with a walk and a strikeout. Cal Lueck pitched two innings allowing two hits and one run. He struck out one and walked one. Tozer pitched three innings allowing three hits and two runs and walked one.

At the plate, Ruf 3x4 scored a run and stole a base. Rothbauer 2x4 scored an RBI and Thurmond 1x2 scored a run and an RBI.

Bloomer (5-3) is scheduled to play a doubleheader at home against Ladysmith on Friday, May 3 and play at Barron on Tuesday, May 7.
