The New Auburn Trojans girls basketball team opened the 2018 season against Granton Thursday, Nov. 15.

The Bulldogs led by five points midway through the first half. The Trojans tied the game at 12-12 with 7:51 remaining in the half, and with Granton going 0-5 at the free-throw line, New Auburn led 17-16 at halftime.

Granton built a four-point lead to start the second half. Senior Nadia Rada sank a 3-pointer to cut the Bulldogs lead to 27-26, and sophomore Emily Elmhorst scored 40 seconds later for the lead with 10:57 remaining in the game. Granton missed two more free throws, and Elmhorst scored for a 30-27 lead.

Granton cut New Auburn’s lead to 32-31, and sophomore Zoey Rada made her second 3-pointer of the game to put the Trojans up 35-31. After going up 40-37 with 3:31 left in the game, the Trojans couldn’t get any more shots to drop and the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run for the 47-40 win.

New Auburn forced 12 turnovers in the game, and were 17-69 from the floor, but just 3-20 on 3-point attempts.

Nadia Rada led both teams with 16 points, while Zoey Rada scored eight points and Elmhorst and senior Emily Bischel scored six points apiece.

Hannah Walter led Granton with nine points.

This year’s Trojans team has 13 players on the roster. The team includes seniors Emily Bischel, Anna Koteras and Nadia Rada; juniors Faith Baker and Savannah Harshman; sophomores Mikayla Boehm, Emily Elmhorst, Stephanie Fedie, Violet Hyke and Zoey Rada; and freshmen Kaylee Boortz and Logan Passe. Coach Karson Rihn and assistant coach Brittany Powell return for their second season.

New Auburn (0-1) hosts Independence Thursday, Nov. 29.
