The Bloomer Blackhawks volleyball team was denied its first trip to state for the third time in the program’s history with a 3-1 loss to Mosinee in the WIAA D2 sectional final at Altoona Saturday, Oct. 28.
The Hawks advanced to the sectional final with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-7, 25-19, 23-25, 15-8) win over #6 Amery at Osceola Thursday, Oct. 25. Amery advanced to the sectional after knocking off #2 St. Croix Central in the regional finals.
Senior Grace Post had 23 kills, an ace, two blocks, a set assist and 12 digs; senior Jessica Barr had 11 kills, five aces, a block, a block assist, four set assists and 12 digs; senior Rilee Luzinski had seven kills, a block assist and four digs; senior Kenadi Poirier had four kills, an ace and a block; senior Karissa Lauer had five kills, a block assist and a dig; senior Chloee Swartz had two kills, 23 set assists and 17 digs; senior Aspyn Arendt had two aces, 21 set assists and 13 digs; and senior Bailey McConaughey had one ace, one set assist and 32 digs.
At Altoona in Bloomer’s 40th match of the season, Mosinee broke a 2-2 tie in the first set to take a 10-3 lead. Bloomer pulled within a point of catching the Indians a couple of times, and then finally at 23-22 before Mosinee won 25-22.
Mosinee won the second set 25-18. The Indians went up 5-2, the Hawks closed the gap to 5-4, and then Mosinee took control. Bloomer never had the lead or tied in the set, and could only cut three points off of Mosinee’s lead, the final time at 19-16.
Bloomer dominated the third set. The Hawks went up 9-3, and Mosinee scored the next three points to put the score at 9-6. The Indians would cut Bloomer’s lead to three points one more time at 12-9 before Bloomer went on to win 25-11.
Bloomer’s momentum carried into the fourth set, as the Hawks took an 11-5 lead, but then things changed. Mosinee scored the next six points, and then took a 15-14 lead, and never trailed again. Mosinee’s lead only reached two points, and the set was tied four times, the final at 23-23. The Indians then scored the final two points to advance to state.
Post had 21 kills, two aces, two blocks, a block assist, two set assists and 11 digs; Barr had 12 kills, five aces, a block assist, one set assist and 13 digs; Poirier had five kills, an ace, a block, a block assist, a set assist and three digs; junior Emma Krejci two kills, three blocks, a block assist, a set assist and a dig; Swartz three kills, an ace, 21 set assists and seven digs; Arendt 15 set assists and four digs; and McConaughey one ace and 16 digs.
Bloomer ends the season as Heart O’ North Conference co-champions and regional champions. Bloomer also advanced to the sectional final in 1997 and 2016.
