The Bloomer Blackhawks volleyball team is heading to the WIAA D2 sectional after claiming the regional championship Saturday, Oct. 20.
The #1 seeded Hawks defeated #8 Rice Lake 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-5) in Thursday’s regional and then #2 Osceola 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 26-24, 25-18).
Bloomer will play #6 seed Amery, who upset #2 St. Croix Central for a regional championship, in the sectional at Osceola Thursday, Oct. 25. The winner will play either #1 West Salem or #2 Mosinee at Altoona Saturday, Oct. 27. All matches are currently scheduled for 7 p.m.
Against Rice Lake, Bloomer led most of the first set, and went up by as much as 18-10 before the Warriors came back and tied the game at 19-19. The Hawks scored the next four points, including two kills from senior Grace Post and an attack from senior Jessica Barr, and took the match 25-21.
The second set was tied at 4-4 when Rice Lake took a lead the Hawks would never break. Bloomer trailed 23-17 and went on a 3-0 run, and then the Warriors scored the final two points.
The Hawks had a five-point lead three times in the third set, the last at 16-11, when Rice Lake caught up to tie it at 16-16. After a 17-17 tie, the Warriors went on an 8-3 run for the win.
Bloomer had another good start in the fourth set, going up 11-6, but Rice Lake tied it at 12-12. The Hawks then went up 17-13, and the Warriors came back and tied it at 22-22 before Bloomer won on a 3-0 run, with senior Kendadi Poirier scoring on a tip kill.
Bloomer pulled away from a 2-2 tie in the fifth set, and up 9-3, senior Bailey McConaughey served three consecutive aces, followed by an out on a Rice Lake attack to put the Hawks up 13-3. Rice Lake scored two points and then Bloomer won 15-5.
Post had 24 kills, an ace, two block assists, seven digs and two set assists; Barr had 13 kills, two aces, two blocks, a block assist, 11 digs and three set assists; senior Rilee Luzinski had five kills, a block assist and five digs; McConaughey had one kill, three aces, 15 digs and a set assist; Poirier had two kills, three block assists and six digs; senior Karissa Lauer had two kills, two block assists, two digs and a set assist; senior Chloe Swartz had 23 set assists, 14 digs and a block assist; and senior Aspyn Arendt had an ace, 16 set assists and 10 digs.
Against Osceola in the regional final, Bloomer went up early and built a 21-13 lead in the first set. The Chieftains went on a 6-1 run, and then the Hawks scored the next three points for the 25-19 win, with the winning point on an ace served by Post.
After a 7-6 lead by the Hawks, the Chieftains took over and several errors by Bloomer helped Osceola win the second set 25-16.
The Chieftains built a 9-5 lead in the third set, but the Hawks caught them at 15-15. Osceola was able to re-establish their lead after a 16-16 tie, at the most by two points, and then Bloomer tied the match at 20-20. The final tie was 24-24, and an out-of-bounds shot and an attack error by the Chieftains gave the Hawks the 26-24 win.
The Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set, and then Osceola cut Bloomer’s lead to 6-5. Bloomer answered with a 7-2 run, and the Chieftains came back to trail by one point (13-12). The Hawks then went up 21-14, the Chieftains scored two consecutive points to cut Bloomer’s lead to five points, and that’s as close as they would come. Up 24-18, an attack from Barr launched the Hawks into the sectional round.
Bloomer’s 20th point in the fourth set marked the 1,000th career set assist for Swartz.
Post had 16 kills, six aces, four digs and a set assist; Barr had 17 kills, two aces, a block, 10 digs and a set assist; junior Emma Krejci had three kills, a block and two digs; Poirier had three kills and five digs; McConaughey had three aces and 24 digs; Swartz had 22 set assists and seven digs; and Arendt had 15 set assists and three digs.
The last time Bloomer reached the sectional was in 2016. Swartz was a member of that team and has played in three regional championships.
