The Bloomer Blackhawks girls basketball team’s season ended with a 56-38 loss to Greendale’s Martin Luther High School in the WIAA D3 state semifinal at Green Bay’s Resch Center Thursday, March 9.
The Blackhawks started off on the wrong foot, turning the ball over on five of their first seven possessions, including the first three. The Spartans scored 1:21 into the game. Senior Aliya Seibel made a free throw 30 seconds after Martin Luther’s first basket for a 2-1 score, and that’s as close as Bloomer would come to catching the Spartans. Martin Luther then went on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes for a 9-1 lead.
Senior Danelle Score made a 3-pointer with 11:47 left in the first half, and senior Chandler Zwiefelhofer scored the next six points for the Hawks. Bloomer pulled within four points of tying the Spartans during that span, and sophomore Sierra Raine’s three-point play put the score at 19-15 with 5:54 left in the half.
Martin Luther went up by nine points, but the Hawks knocked the lead down to seven points three times during the remainder of the half. Sierra Raine made a free throw with 12:47 left in the game for a 34-26 score, but Martin Luther followed with a 6-0 run for a 41-26 lead as Bloomer kept missing shots.
Junior Justyne Burgess ended the run with 8:49 on the clock, and Chandler Zwiefelhofer made a couple of free throws (43-30) with 7:32 left to play, and she sank a jumper less than a couple of minutes later to put the score at 47-32. Sophomore Emma Kallas came off of the bench and led both teams with 21 points, while starting seniors Emily Hafeman and Grace Amling scored 10 points apiece.
Bloomer ends the season with a 22-5 overall record.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls, even though it didn’t turn out the way that we wanted it to,” coach Nikki Seibel said. “They gave everything that they had for both halves. I have a lot of seniors and juniors that have played together for a long time, so for them it’s bittersweet. We got an opportunity to play at the Resch Center, which most teams can only dream about. But these ladies gave their heart and soul the last couple of weeks. I’m just proud of them.”
Martin Luther went on to play Madison Edgewood in the championship, and lost 51-30.
