Five gymnasts from Phoenix Gymnastics Club in Bloomer traveled to Tampa, Fla. June 27 to compete in the National AAU Meet held at the Tampa Convention Center.
The gymnasts and their families enjoyed a couple days of downtime at the beach and Busch Gardens before taking on competitors from all over the United States.
Trina Pyka, age 9, and first year Xcel Silver gymnast, four year gymnast was the first to compete. She competed on June 28 and earned 11th place all-around in her age group.
The next night featured the parade of athletes with a program much like the Olympics. The gymnasts were introduced by state and marched in. Some inspiring measures from coaches, athletes and leaders followed by wiener dog races and a dance off summed up the evening.
The morning of June 30 the remaining four Phoenix Gymnasts competed, Isabel Rubenzer, Celina Hess, Maya Larson and Lauren Ruff. Coach Shanna McMullin did an amazing job juggling as both the Xcel Gold and Platinum competed at the same time in two separate gyms making for an interesting coaching feat. The girls stepped up to the game and helped each other. That and with the help of other amazing coaches on the floor, the girls placed in all brought home medals in all of the events and all-around.
Isabel Rubenzer, age 11, Xcel Gold gymnast, third year competing earned the following: 5th place on bars and beam, 6th place floor, 6th place all-around.
Celina Hess, age 11, Xcel Platinum, fourth year competing earned the following: 4th place on vault and 7th place all-around in the Xcel Platinum age 11 bracket.

Lauren Ruff, age 12, Xcel Platinum, fifth year competing earned the following: 4th on beam, 5th on vault and 7th all around.
The gymnasts and their families can’t thank the coaches enough for their dedication and drive to make this opportunity happen!
