A 36-year-old Minnesota man is the subject of a bench warrant issued Friday, March 17, 2023, in Barron County Court after he failed to show up for a sentencing hearing.
David M. Jones, St. Francis, Minn., pleaded guilty Jan. 17 to a single felony charge of falsely acting as a public official in connection with a charge that he drove a pickup truck with flashing yellow lights while stealing thousands of dollars in copper wire near Almena in June 2022.
Prosecutors made a deal with Jones, agreeing to dismiss two other felony charges in exchange for his guilty plea.
Jones was to have been sentenced March 17, but didn’t show up for the hearing, court records said. The arrest warrant is valid in Wisconsin and adjacent states.
The original complaint said Jones drove a white pickup truck with amber blinking lights, then used a reciprocating saw and other tools to steal copper wire from a utility pole and an electrical substation between Almena and Turtle Lake last June 25.
Damage to the substation, alone, was estimated at $10,000, the complaint said.
