The 41st Annual Chippewa County 4-H/FFA Livestock Show and Sale grossed $296,833.25 Thursday, July 12 at the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. While the 2021 sale had the fewest number of animals since 2014, it was the highest grossing sale ever, surpassing old record set in 2016 by more than $63,000.

Sixty buyers purchased 96 head of livestock, which included 42 barrows, 42 steers and 12 wethers. After subtracting checkoff, hauling and a 3.5 percent commission to the livestock commission, the net total distributed to the sellers was $284,983.72.

Last year’s auction was cancelled due to COVID, but the 2019 auction sold 118 head of livestock to 70 buyers, which included 55 barrows, 40 steers and 23 wethers. The 2019 sale grossed $228,033.60 and netted $218,613.07.

Total gross for steers was $186,614.25, up from 2019’s gross of $164,521.15.

Levi Lindsay, of Boyd, sold his reserve grand champion 1,560 pound beef steer to Wheaton Grain, for $3.50/lb., for a total of $5,460.00.

Adam Geissler, of Chippewa Falls, sold his grand champion 1,360 pound dairy steer to Rumor Mill Pub and Grill for $5.50/lb., for a total of $7,480.00.

Ryleigh Breuch, of Boyd, sold her reserve champion 1,385 pound dairy steer to Marks Farms LTD for $3.75/lb., for a total of $5,193.00.

The average price per pound for steers with champions included was $3.30, and $3.14 without champions. 2019’s averages were $3.09, and $3.10.

Total gross for barrows was $52,041.25, up from 2019’s gross of $52,041.25.

Hunter Hilger, of Bloomer, sold his grand champion 297 pound barrow to Woodland Farms for $17.50/lb., for a total of $5,197.50 which was a new record price for the Chippewa County quality meats auction. The previous record was $16.00/lb. set earlier in the auction by a hog sold by Clare Bohl, of Bloomer. Hilger’s record was broken by the reserve champion sold right after his barrow.

Avery Michels, of Chippewa Falls, set the final new record price per pound for barrows at the Chippewa County 4-H/FFA Livestock auction when she sold her reserve champion 280 pound barrow to Korger’s Decorating for $18.00/lb., for a total of $5,040.00. The price per pound and total were the highest for barrows in the history of the auction.

The average price per pound for barrows with champions included was $8.80, and $8.32 without champions. 2019’s averages were $3.56, and $3.50.

Total gross sales for wethers were $10,136.75, down from 2019’s gross of $11,471.20.

Arabella Knuth, of Fall Creek, sold her grand champion 146 pound wether to Big Mike’s Meats for $10.50/lb., for a total of $1,533.00.

Natalie Liszewski, of Boyd, sold her reserve grand champion 108 pound wether to Stockman Farm Supply for $8.75/lb., for a total of $945.00.

The average price per pound for wethers with champions included was $6.55, and $5.92 without champions. 2019’s averages were $3.76, and $3.52.
