Bloomer Police Department’s new squad car was involved in a three vehicle accident Monday morning, March 13 in Bloomer. Bloomer Police Chief Jared Zwiefelhofer was stopped, westbound on Ninth Ave. at the corner of Oak St., when an eastbound vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign and hit a pickup truck traveling north on Oak St. Northbound traffic on Oak St. has the right-of-way at the intersection with Ninth Ave.
The driver of the pickup truck took evasive action to avoid the collision but was struck never-the-less and shoved into the stopped police car.
The new squad car is equipped with a video camera and Zwiefelhofer said, “The camera worked perfectly and the whole accident is on video. I didn’t even realize the other car didn’t stop at the stop sign until I watched the video.”
Zwiefelhofer said the new police car only has 400 miles on it and hasn’t been officially put into service. He said it was scheduled to be put into service following training on new features of the vehicle on Wednesday, March 15.
Damage to the new police car is estimated at $6,000. The pickup truck was damaged in two areas, one in the driver’s door where it was struck and the other where it hit the police car. Zwiefelhofer said the vehicle that failed to stop at the stop sign probably sustained the least amount of damage.
Thankfully no one was injured in the accident.
Prior to the accident the Bloomer Advance was planning on doing an article on the new police car and its new features. The article will be postponed until the car is out of the shop and ready to go into service.
It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the city of Bloomer and its insurance company with two garbage trucks damaged by fire Friday, March 3, and now the newest police car damaged in an accident.
