It has been a week since Jan Morrow opened the valve on her bulk tank and dumped two days of milk production, roughly 3500 lbs., down the drain on her and her husband Clair's farm half-way between Bloomer and Cornell. Morrow says other farmers dumped milk last week, including two more in Wisconsin, plus she said two, 800-cow farms in Idaho plan to dump milk on Tuesday, May 12.
The milk dumps are in protest of low milk prices to farmers. Morrow said on their most recent milk check they were paid $10.67 per hundredweight. Experts across the country, including Chippewa County crops and soils educator Jerry Clark, agree that it costs farmers $15 to $18 per hundredweight to produce milk.
